Application process

Your path to United Arab Emirates, in six moves.

Decide: stay in UAE or branch campus?

Khalifa, UAEU, AUS, Zayed are UAE institutions. NYUAD, Heriot-Watt Dubai, UOWD, AUD are branches of US/UK/AUS universities — check which degree certificate you'll receive.

Take admission tests

EmSAT is required by government universities (Khalifa, UAEU, Zayed). SAT/ACT accepted for most private & branch campuses. IELTS/TOEFL separately for English.

Apply direct to each university

UAE has no central admissions portal. Each university has its own online application. Private and branch universities accept rolling applications.

Submit transcripts, essays, LORs

UAEU and Khalifa require MoE-attested transcripts. NYUAD demands substantial essays + CSS Profile for aid. Private universities are lighter on essays.

Scholarship & aid applications

Run in parallel. Scholarship deadlines are often tighter than admission deadlines. We map every award each family qualifies for.

Residence visa via the university

Once you accept, the university sponsors your student residence visa. Annual renewal tied to academic good standing.

Visa & post-study work

The United Arab Emirates visa route in plain English.

Student Residence Visa. Sponsored by the UAE university; valid 1 year, renewable for duration of programme. Allows re-entry and part-time work (up to 15 hours/week) with a No Objection Certificate.

Golden Visa for outstanding students. Top 10% UG graduates and top graduates from accredited universities qualify for the UAE Golden Visa (5–10 years). A path to independent residence.

Employment after graduation. Shift from student to work residence requires an employer sponsor. The UAE Green Visa and self-employment options are growing routes for entrepreneurial graduates.

Parents/dependants. UAE residents applying to UAE universities retain dependent status under parental sponsorship until 21 (males) — a significant advantage.

Living & costs

What it actually costs to live here.

Monthly budget. You're likely already living in the UAE — keep costs roughly as they are. Branch-campus students in Dubai Knowledge Park or Academic City: AED 4,000–8,000/month if living independently.

Accommodation. Most UAE students live at home. Campus housing available at Khalifa, NYUAD, AUS, UAEU (often mandatory for first-year UG). NYUAD fully funds housing for aided students.

Transport. Metro + bus covers Dubai and Sharjah well for students. Many use family cars. Abu Dhabi and Al Ain campuses typically require bus commutes or on-campus living.

Staying close to family. The underrated advantage. Weekends at home, internships in Dubai or Abu Dhabi, no visa to renew in a foreign country. For many families, this outweighs QS ranking differences.

Scholarships & funding

The funded routes into United Arab Emirates.

NYUAD need-blind aid. NYU Abu Dhabi treats internationals with the same need-blind admissions and 100% demonstrated-need aid as US applicants. Tuition, housing, meals and annual flights home are all covered for families that qualify.

Khalifa merit & full-fund PhDs. Khalifa offers substantial UG merit awards. PhDs are mostly fully funded with monthly stipend.

Sheikh Mohammed & Sheikh Zayed scholarships. Named awards across several UAE universities for outstanding Emirati and resident students. Eligibility varies by programme and year.

Branch campus parent-body scholarships. Heriot-Watt, Wollongong, Middlesex Dubai, Curtin Dubai — each has its own scholarship portfolio. Often underused because families don't realise they're available.

United Arab Emirates FAQs

Questions families ask first.

Branch campuses (NYUAD, Heriot-Watt Dubai, Wollongong Dubai, Curtin Dubai) issue the same degree certificate as the parent institution — so yes, a degree from NYU Abu Dhabi is an NYU degree recognised globally. UAE institutions (Khalifa, AUS, UAEU) issue UAE degrees that are increasingly well-recognised, especially in the GCC and emerging markets.
Yes, especially if you maintain strong grades. AUS, NYUAD and Khalifa students have transferred to Ivy League and Russell Group institutions after 1–2 years. The transfer pathway is particularly viable from NYU Abu Dhabi to NYU New York.
Yes. Most Khalifa PhD programmes are fully funded — tuition waived, plus a monthly stipend of AED 6,000–12,000 depending on programme and year. Applications are competitive and typically require a research supervisor match.
EmSAT is the UAE's standardised admissions test, required by Khalifa, UAEU, Zayed and some other government-linked universities. Private universities (AUS, NYUAD, Heriot-Watt Dubai) typically don't require it. We help plan test timelines — EmSAT is offered multiple times per year.
NYUAD reviews your application without seeing your financial situation, then offers admission based purely on merit. Separately, financial aid is calculated from your CSS Profile to cover 100% of demonstrated need — tuition, room, board, and two annual flights home. In practice, many UAE and international families pay close to zero.
